What it is

Talk therapy with a provider who understands your full picture

Psychotherapy is a space to slow down, talk things through, and better understand what you're experiencing. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, stress, low mood, or ongoing life challenges, psychotherapy helps you build awareness, develop coping strategies, and make meaningful progress over time.

At Stillwell Psychiatry, psychotherapy can be integrated into your overall care when needed—so your provider understands both the clinical and personal side of what you're going through.

Who it's for

For adults navigating real, everyday challenges

Psychotherapy can be helpful if you're:

  • Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck
  • Dealing with depression or low motivation
  • Working through stress, burnout, or life transitions
  • Struggling with sleep, focus, or emotional regulation
  • Looking for structured support and practical tools

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from psychotherapy—many people start simply because they want to feel better and function more consistently day to day.

Patient in a supportive telehealth psychotherapy session

How it works

Simple, consistent, and tailored to you

Psychotherapy sessions are conducted through secure telehealth and typically last 45–60 minutes.

Your provider will work with you using evidence-based psychotherapy approaches—adjusted to fit your goals and what you're working through:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Supportive TherapyMindfulness-Based Strategies

Some patients use psychotherapy on its own, while others combine it with medication management as part of a broader care plan.

Why telehealth works

Same quality care, more flexibility

Telehealth psychotherapy makes it easier to stay consistent with care. You can meet from home, avoid long commutes, and fit sessions into your routine more easily.

For many patients, that consistency is what leads to real, lasting progress with psychotherapy.

Therapy FAQ

Common questions about psychotherapy

How is this different from seeing a standalone therapist?

The clinical work is similar, but the same provider handles both therapy and medication. That means changes in your treatment plan happen in one room — no playing telephone between a prescriber and a therapist who've never met. For some patients that integration is the entire point; for others, a separate dedicated therapist is the better fit, and we'll say so.

How often will we meet?

Most psychotherapy is weekly or biweekly. Frequency is one of the variables we adjust based on what you're working on and how things are going — early intensive work tends to be weekly, then steps down as goals are met.

What approaches do you use?

Primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), supportive therapy, and mindfulness-informed strategies. We tailor the approach to the problem — CBT-I for insomnia, exposure work for anxiety and OCD, behavioral activation for depression — rather than running every patient through the same script.

Can I do therapy without medication?

Yes. Plenty of patients use psychotherapy as their entire treatment plan — particularly for adjustment, mild-to-moderate anxiety, and life-stage transitions. Medication is a tool we reach for when the evidence supports it, not a default.

Does therapy actually work over telehealth?

Research consistently shows telehealth psychotherapy is as effective as in-person for the conditions we treat. The therapeutic alliance — the working relationship between you and your provider — comes through video about as well as it does in a room.
