What it is
A first visit that takes the time to understand you
A psychiatric evaluation is a structured first visit designed to understand what's going on—your symptoms, history, and what you're hoping to get out of care.
You'll meet with a board-certified provider for a 60-minute conversation that goes beyond surface-level questions, so your care starts with clarity—not guesswork.
By the end of your psychiatric evaluation, you'll have a clearer understanding of what you're experiencing and what the next steps may look like.

Who it's for
For anyone starting care or looking for clearer answers
A psychiatric evaluation is a good fit if you:
- Are seeking help for the first time
- Aren’t sure what you’re experiencing but want answers
- Have tried treatment before and want a fresh, thoughtful approach
- Are considering medication or therapy and want guidance
You don't need to have everything figured out before you book. The evaluation is designed to help make sense of things and guide you forward.

What to expect
A simple, guided process from start to finish
From the moment you book to the plan you leave with, every step is designed to feel calm, structured, and unhurried—so you can focus on the conversation, not the logistics.
A short intake form
You’ll complete a brief intake covering your history, symptoms, and goals so your provider has a head start before the visit.
A guided 60-minute conversation
Your provider walks through your background, current concerns, and any relevant medical or mental health history—taking the time to understand the full picture.
A clear plan to move forward
You leave with a personalized plan—therapy, medication management, follow-up visits, or a combination of care options depending on what’s appropriate.
Why telehealth works here
A more comfortable way to have an honest conversation
Telehealth makes it easier to have open, focused conversations—without the stress of commuting or sitting in a waiting room.
Many patients find they're more comfortable speaking from home, which allows for a more honest and productive psychiatric evaluation.
The quality of care remains the same—the only difference is how easy it is to access.

Evaluations FAQ
Common questions about psychiatric evaluations
Do I need a referral for a psychiatric evaluation?
No. You can self-refer and book directly through Zocdoc. Most insurance plans don't require a referral for psychiatric care, but if yours does, we'll flag it during booking so you have time to request one from your primary care provider.
How long is the evaluation?
The initial evaluation is 60 minutes. That's long enough to cover your history, current symptoms, prior treatment, family and medical context, and the goals you have for care — and still leave time to talk through next steps.
What happens after the evaluation?
You leave with a working diagnosis (or a list of possibilities being assessed), a plan for next steps — medication, therapy, labs, referrals, or some combination — and a follow-up scheduled if one is appropriate. Prescriptions, when relevant, are sent the same day.
Can I get records, letters, or accommodations from this visit?
Yes — within reason. We provide visit summaries, work-ROAs as clinically appropriate, and standard disability or accommodation letters tied to documented findings. ESA letters and similar third-party documentation requests are evaluated case-by-case and only issued when clinically supported.
Will my insurance cover this?
Stillwell Psychiatry is in-network with most major carriers and more than 200 plans through Zocdoc. Coverage for psychiatric evaluations is standard across nearly all behavioral-health benefits, and Zocdoc verifies your specific copay during booking.
